Luhuitou Park

A forested hilltop park with the giant deer statue and panoramic views over Sanya Bay

Luhuitou Park covers the entire wooded peninsula south of Sanya and is the main reason to come: a road and a footpath wind up through subtropical forest to a viewpoint plateau at about 270 metres, dominated by a colossal stone statue of the deer-becoming-a-woman that gives the headland its name. The view from the top takes in the whole of Sanya Bay — the city to the north, Dadonghai beach below, and the East China Sea curving away to the southeast.

A small herd of the Hainan deer, the island's native sub-species, lives in fenced enclosures on the hilltop. The park has a chairlift from the foot of the hill if you don't want to walk; the road is also open to taxis. Allow two hours including the walk and the views. Entry is ticketed.

A story
The "deer turning its head" of the local Li legend is given the full Chinese monumental treatment at the top of the hill: a 12-metre granite sculpture of the deer mid-transformation, the moment her antlers begin to soften into a woman's hair. The story belongs to the Li, Hainan's indigenous people, who lived on this coast for two millennia before Han colonisation.
