Pigeon Nest Park

Pigeon Nest Park sits at the eastern end of the Beidaihe scenic area, where a cluster of large granite rocks juts into the Bohai Sea. The rocks are riddled with crevices, and doves have nested here for as long as locals can remember — hence the name, even though the main formation looks more like a perched eagle than a pigeon. The Eagle Pavilion at the summit offers the best sunrise views in the area.

The park is a favourite with birders during migration season. The rocky headland acts as a natural funnel for migrating raptors and passerines in spring and autumn, and the associated scrub and pine trees hold good numbers of warblers and flycatchers. Early mornings in May can be spectacular. The rocky shore below the park is also worth checking for waders and seabirds.

A story
The park takes its name from the flocks of doves that nest in the cracks of a large coastal rock formation — but the rock itself is said to resemble an eagle. The Eagle Pavilion at the top became famous as Mao Zedong's preferred spot to watch the sunrise during the Communist Party's annual summer retreats in Beidaihe.
