Chongli Ski Resorts

The Chongli district, about ninety minutes northeast of Zhangjiakou city centre, was transformed by the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics into the most developed ski area in China. Several large resorts operate on the slopes here — Thaiwoo, Genting Snow Park, and the older Fulong and Wanlong resorts — with a combined run count and lift infrastructure that has made Chongli genuinely competitive with mid-tier European destinations.

The Olympic venues at Genting Snow Park are open to visitors even in summer, when the mountain scenery is striking in a completely different way. In winter, the season runs reliably from early December to late March, with the cold dry air of the plateau producing good natural snow that holds well. Weekends attract large crowds from Beijing; mid-week visits are substantially quieter. Accommodation ranges from mid-range hotels attached to the resorts to budget guesthouses in the town centre below. The fast train from Beijing to Zhangjiakou station, then a shuttle to Chongli, makes the whole journey straightforward without a car.

A story
When Zhangjiakou co-hosted the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the biathlon, cross-country, and Nordic combined events all took place in Chongli. The athletes' village and competition venues were built at a scale that would have seemed absurd for a town of 120,000 — and now serve a constant stream of weekend skiers from Beijing, three hours away by fast train.
