Grassland Sky Road

The Grassland Sky Road is a scenic driving route west of Zhangjiakou that crosses the rolling uplands of the inner Mongolian-Hebei borderlands, offering panoramic views over open grassland that feel a world away from the industrial city below. The road climbs through the mountains and emerges onto a plateau where the horizon stretches in all directions and the sky genuinely seems larger.

The best time to drive the route is in July and August when the grass is at its peak and wildflowers are out, or in autumn when the upland vegetation turns gold and the light is at its most photogenic. In winter the landscape becomes bleached and abstract — still striking but more austere. The road is served by private vehicles and tour buses from Zhangjiakou; it is not easily reached by public transport, so most visitors either join a local tour or rent a car for the day.

A story
The Sky Road gets its name partly from its elevation — stretching across rolling uplands over 1,600 metres above sea level — and partly from the illusion on clear days that the asphalt road ahead is dissolving into the horizon. In midsummer the grassland on either side turns an intense yellow- green that photographers specifically time their visits to catch.
