The Daqing Petroleum Science and Technology Museum is the most substantive attraction in the city and a genuinely good industrial history museum by any standard. Opened in 2009, it covers the discovery of the Daqing oil reserves in 1959, the political context of the Maoist "learn from Daqing" campaign, the engineering challenges of extracting oil from the permafrost-adjacent plains, and the development of China's petroleum industry from those origins to the present.
The outdoor display area is particularly striking: decommissioned drilling rigs, pumping equipment, military vehicles, and the kind of heavy machinery that defined the first years of the oilfield sit in the open air with explanatory signage. Inside, scale models and actual equipment are combined with honest documentation of the living conditions in the early work brigades, when workers lived in temporary shelters through Heilongjiang winters. Admission is free and the museum is open most days; closed on Tuesdays. Located in the Longfeng District on Wenyuan Street, in the High-tech Industrial Development Zone.
