Daoli is the old foreign quarter of Harbin and the district that best preserves the city's remarkable multicultural past. The streets around Zhongyang Dajie and the nearby lanes are packed with European-era buildings — onion-domed churches, art nouveau apartment blocks, and neoclassical commercial buildings that would not look out of place in Riga or Prague. Walking these streets remains the best way to understand why Harbin feels unlike any other Chinese city.
Beyond the architecture, Daoli has good practical appeal. The night market on Shitouren Alley is one of the city's best eating experiences, with stalls selling northeastern specialities: cold marinated beef, grilled lamb skewers, and the area's famous hongchangshaoroubing (pork pancakes). The district is compact enough to explore on foot in an afternoon.
