Getting Around

Harbin has a metro system with several lines covering the main districts, including stops near Zhongyang Dajie (Central Street) and the railway station. For most visitors, the metro plus walking covers the key areas. Taxis are cheap and widely available; ride-hailing apps (DiDi) work well and are generally cheaper than hailing on the street.

In winter, be cautious on foot — icy pavements without gripping footwear are a genuine hazard. Many locals wear clip-on ice grippers sold at hardware stores for a few yuan. Cycling is popular in warmer months; the riverside embankment and island parks are pleasant on a rented bike.
