Sun Island sits across the Songhua River from central Harbin and gives the city one of its classic escapes. In summer it is a broad scenic area of lawns, wetlands, paths, and river air; in winter it becomes closely tied to Harbin's snow sculpture season.
It is worth crossing the river for the change of scale alone. The city centre can feel dense and monumental, while Sun Island spreads out horizontally, with room to walk, cycle, or linger. In deep winter, dress seriously; the art may be made of snow, but the cold is the real material.
