Suifenhe is built into a gap in hilly terrain near the border, and the higher ground above the town offers views over the surrounding forested hills and, on clear days, across the border into Russia. There is no formal viewpoint infrastructure — these are walkable slopes above the town rather than designated scenic spots — but the effort of 20 to 30 minutes of uphill walking is repaid by a perspective that the flat commercial streets of the town centre entirely miss.
The hills are forested with the mixed boreal woodland typical of this corner of Heilongjiang, and the walks are pleasant in summer and autumn. In winter the slopes above the town can be icy and the view is largely of grey sky, but the frozen landscape has its own starkness. The best light for views into Russia is on clear mornings before any haze builds.
