Yanqing Taoist Temple is a compact but rewarding stop in Kaifeng, especially if you are already tracing the city's older religious sites around Baogong Lake. It is associated with Wang Chongyang, the founder of the Quanzhen school of Daoism, and the surviving complex is best known for its unusual pavilion-like tower: a square Yuan-dynasty base carrying an octagonal upper structure with bright glazed details.
It is quieter than Kaifeng's headline temples, which is part of the appeal. The visit is more about architecture and atmosphere than spectacle, so give it a short, unhurried look rather than treating it as a major half-day sight. Combined with Kaifeng Fu and Daxiangguo Temple, it helps fill in the city's religious landscape beyond the better-known Buddhist monuments.
