Shanzhou Silo-Cave

Sunken courtyard dwellings showing Sanmenxia's distinctive loess-plateau architecture

Shanzhou Silo-Cave introduces one of western Henan's most distinctive building traditions: courtyard homes dug down into the loess earth rather than built up above it. From ground level the settlement can seem almost hidden, but the sunken courtyards open into cool rooms, kitchens, and domestic spaces below.

The site is valuable because it turns an architectural adaptation into something travellers can understand on foot. Visit it for the relationship between climate, soil, and everyday life, not for grand monuments.
