Former Home of Shen Congwen

Modest Fenghuang courtyard house devoted to one of modern China's major writers

The Former Home of Shen Congwen is a small courtyard residence inside Fenghuang Ancient Town, dedicated to the writer whose fiction did much to fix western Hunan in the modern Chinese imagination. The house is not grand, but that modest scale suits the subject: manuscripts, photographs, and biographical displays sit inside a traditional family setting.

It is most rewarding if you know at least a little about Shen before you arrive, especially his novel Border Town and his attention to the river cultures of Xiangxi. Even without that background, the residence adds a quieter literary layer to a town that can otherwise feel dominated by river views and souvenir streets.
