Chuanshan Academy on Dongzhou Island in the Xiang River honours Wang Fuzhi (1619–1692), one of the most original philosophers in Chinese history and Hunan's most celebrated intellectual. Wang was a Ming loyalist who retreated to the mountains after the Qing conquest, living in voluntary poverty and writing prolifically about philosophy, history, and politics. His posthumous influence on late Qing reformers and early Republicans was enormous; he is sometimes called the Chinese Rousseau.
The island setting gives the academy a peaceful, slightly removed quality. The buildings cluster around a central memorial hall containing Wang's portrait and texts from his works. The surrounding grounds are pleasant for a short walk. Combined with nearby Shigu Academy, a visit here fills out a picture of Hengyang's long scholarly tradition — this is a city that has produced serious thinkers, not just soldiers.
