Huiyan Peak

Huiyan Peak rises 98 metres on the southern edge of Hengyang's urban area, providing views over the Xiang River and the city below that reward the short climb. The peak is closely associated with the classical poetic image of wild geese stopping at Hengyang — the same image that gave the city its nickname "Wild Goose City" — and a pavilion at the summit references this literary tradition with inscriptions from classical poems.

The climb takes 20–30 minutes along stone steps through planted woodland. The summit is pleasant on clear days and popular with local residents for morning exercise. Below the peak, a small park at the riverside offers a place to sit and watch river traffic on the Xiang. It is the most accessible piece of nature within the city, and a gentle counterpoint to Hengyang's otherwise industrial character.

A story
The name Huiyan — "Wild Goose Returns" — comes from the classical Chinese poetic tradition in which geese flying south stop at Hengyang because the climate is warm enough here; they go no further. Dozens of Tang and Song dynasty poets used Hengyang and its wild geese as a metaphor for the southernmost point of civilised life. The peak still has a pavilion inscribed with lines from these poems.
