Gaoyi Ancient Village

Ming and Qing mountain village in Huitong County with a large group of preserved timber houses

Gaoyi Ancient Village sits deep in Huitong County, west of Huaihua's urban core, where the foothills of the Xuefeng Mountains meet the Wushui River system. The village is known for its dense cluster of old timber houses, lanes, gates, and ancestral spaces, many dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is not polished in the way China's famous ancient towns can be, and that is part of its value.

Come for slow wandering rather than a single marquee sight. The appeal is in the way the buildings still form a living settlement, with courtyards, rice fields, and forested slopes wrapped around them. It is a long day trip from Huaihua, but worthwhile if you are interested in rural Hunan architecture and want something quieter than Fenghuang.
