Dongting Lake is China's second-largest freshwater lake and one of Yueyang's defining landscapes. Its wetlands are important for migratory birds, and the scenery changes strongly with the seasons as water levels rise and fall.
The lake is best treated as a broader nature outing rather than a single viewpoint. Junshan Island and the Yueyang waterfront are the easiest ways to experience it.
