Hailar's attractions divide between the city itself and the exceptional landscape it gives access to. The Japanese fortification complex is the most distinctive urban sight — sobering and historically important. The grasslands of Hulunbuir are the main event for most visitors, reached in a couple of hours by hired car. The Irguna Wetlands to the north offer a different, quieter face of the region's ecology.
