Nantong's food is centred on the Yangtze River: freshwater fish, crabs, and shrimp from the estuary dominate the menus of better restaurants. The city also has a vigorous street food culture — malatang hotpot, pancake rolls, and skewered seafood from vendors along the Haohe River are as good a late-night meal as anything in the formal restaurants.
