Langshan (Wolf Hill)

Langshan — Wolf Hill — is Nantong's principal scenic attraction: a wooded hill topped by the Guangjiao Temple complex and overlooking a broad stretch of the Yangtze River. The ascent is short — the hill is only 106 metres — but the atmosphere at the summit rewarding: the temple buildings are active and well-maintained, incense smoke drifts between the halls, and the river views on clear days extend for kilometres.

The hill is one of eight famous Buddhist mountains in China and draws genuine pilgrims alongside tourists. The Guangjiao Temple is dedicated to Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, whose worship is central to Pure Land Buddhist practice, and the ritual activity in the main halls has a sincerity that distinguishes it from many more commercially developed temple complexes. The evening view from the summit over the Yangtze at sunset is particularly worth the visit.

A story
Langshan has been a site of Buddhist pilgrimage since the Tang dynasty, when the monk Juzan established a temple here after a vision. The hill is traditionally associated with Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva, one of the principal bodhisattvas of Pure Land Buddhism, making it one of eight famous Buddhist mountains in China — an unusual distinction for a hill only 106 metres tall.
