Maoshan Mountain is one of the big Taoist landscapes of southern Jiangsu, lying between Zhenjiang, Nanjing, and Changzhou. Its temples and wooded slopes make a very different outing from Zhenjiang's Yangtze-side hills, with more of a pilgrimage atmosphere and a full scenic-area feel.
The mountain takes planning because it is well outside central Zhenjiang. Go for the combination of religious architecture, ridge views, and forest walks, and allow enough time for transport rather than treating it as a quick city stop.
