Jingdezhen's porcelain markets range from the tourist-oriented stalls near the Ancient Kiln area (dominated by mass-produced blue-and-white replicas) to the more interesting Taoxichuan weekend market where contemporary artists sell directly to buyers. The distinction matters: most of what you see on the tourist lane is factory ware produced elsewhere; the interesting pieces require more searching.
The Sculpture Factory area, a cluster of old workshops not far from the city centre, has studios and small shops selling contemporary and traditional work from local artists at more reasonable prices than the gallery district. Bargaining is not expected when prices are displayed; galleries with posted prices are generally firmer than market stalls. For serious purchases, ask to see the artisan's kiln mark documentation — it establishes provenance and authorship.
