Taoxichuan Creative District

Taoxichuan (陶溪川) is a regenerated 1950s porcelain factory complex along the Changjiang River that has become the centre of Jingdezhen's contemporary ceramic arts scene. The red-brick workshops and warehouses have been converted into studios, galleries, ceramic markets, and cafés, with the original industrial architecture preserved and incorporated into the design.

The energy here is genuinely creative rather than just commercial. Hundreds of young artists have moved to Jingdezhen specifically because of Taoxichuan and the supportive community it has generated — on any given afternoon you can walk into open studios and watch people working, look at new ceramic work fresh from the kiln, and buy pieces directly from the artists who made them. The weekend ceramic market is the best place to find interesting contemporary work. The district is also simply pleasant to walk through — the canal alongside the former factory buildings makes for good evening strolling.

A story
The factory complex was built in the 1950s as a state-owned porcelain production facility and employed thousands of workers at its peak. When it closed in the 1990s following market reforms, it stood empty for over a decade. The transformation into an art district began around 2013 and has become one of the most successful examples of industrial heritage conversion in interior China, drawing hundreds of ceramic artists from across the country and abroad.
