Boat tours on Poyang Lake are the most rewarding way to experience the winter birdwatching. Small wooden fishing boats operated by local guides depart from Wucheng and other shore points in the pre-dawn hours, reaching the main bird concentration areas by first light when the cranes and geese are most active — taking flight from roost sites, feeding on submerged vegetation, and moving between the exposed mudflats in large formations. The low-angled winter light and the flat reflective surface of the lake make for extraordinary photography conditions.
Tours range from two to four hours and cost between 100 and 300 yuan per boat depending on the operator and the route. The best operators know the current position of the crane flocks and can navigate the shallow channels without disturbing the birds. Pre-booking through guesthouses in Wucheng is the most reliable approach; turning up at the waterfront and negotiating directly is possible but riskier in terms of guide quality.
