Beyond the Siberian cranes, Poyang Lake supports one of the richest concentrations of migratory waterbirds in East Asia. In winter, the lake holds hundreds of thousands of individuals across dozens of species: white-naped cranes, hooded cranes, greater white-fronted geese, bean geese, Eurasian wigeons, tufted ducks, falcated ducks, and many others. The diversity of habitat — open water, shallow mudflats, reed beds, and grassland — supports an unusually wide range of ecological niches in a relatively compact area.
For dedicated birdwatchers, Poyang is a serious destination. The combination of globally significant crane populations, sheer bird numbers, and the visual drama of large flocks moving over the flat wetland landscape makes it one of the best birdwatching sites in China. A visit of two to three days during the December-January peak allows time to cover multiple viewing areas and encounter different habitat types.
