The Fangchuan National Scenic Area southeast of Hunchun city is the primary tourist destination in the Yanbian region for visitors interested in Hunchun's extraordinary geographic position. A viewing tower at the end of the main access road overlooks the Tumen River delta where China, Russia, and North Korea converge — on a clear day, all three countries are simultaneously visible.
The North Korean bank is close enough to see detail: buildings, farm land, and occasionally people going about their day in a country almost entirely closed to outside observation. The Russian Far East stretches to the east, and the narrow channel of the Tumen River below marks the international boundaries. The symbolism — three very different political systems compressed into a single landscape — is considerable.
The reserve also has volcanic hot springs that have been developed into spa facilities, taking advantage of the geothermal activity that characterises this part of the Changbai volcanic zone. The approach road through wetland and forest is worth the journey on its own terms.
Tours to the Fangchuan area are easily arranged from Yanji or from Hunchun city. Independent access by car is straightforward during the open season; the border sensitivity of the area means staying on designated paths is important.
