Tonghua connects to Changchun and Shenyang by rail, and is the transit point for travellers heading to Ji'an and the Koguryo UNESCO sites or continuing south toward Changbaishan. The train station is the practical hub. From the station, buses run east to Ji'an (about an hour along the Yalu River) and south toward Baishan and the Changbai approaches.
The city has no civilian airport. Visitors flying in from Beijing or further afield typically connect through Changchun or Shenyang.
