Fuling Tomb (East Tomb)

Forested tomb complex of the Qing dynasty's founder, east of the city

Fuling is the mausoleum of Nurhaci, the founder of the Manchu state who began construction of Shenyang's imperial palace in 1625. He died in 1626 before seeing his project completed, and the tomb was built by his son. The complex lies about 11 kilometres east of central Shenyang, set against a forested hillside in a way that contrasts with the urban setting of Zhaoling.

The Fuling complex is smaller and quieter than the North Tomb, and feels more genuinely historic for it. The approach through old trees, the spirit road, and the burial structures all have an atmosphere that the busier sites in the city lack. Together with Zhaoling and the Shenyang Imperial Palace, Fuling forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites associated with the early Qing dynasty. The most efficient way to visit is by taxi from the city centre, combined with a walk back through the surrounding park.
