Guide Old Town

Guide's old town sits on a terrace above the Yellow River, a compact grid of traditional courtyard houses and market streets that serves a population of Tibetan, Salar, and Han Chinese residents in roughly equal measure. The mix is evident in the market: stalls selling dried yak meat, traditional Tibetan dairy products, and Salar-spiced lamb dishes sit alongside Han noodle shops and a weekly produce market that draws farmers from the surrounding terraced valleys.

The central mosque — a reminder that the Salar Muslim community has been here for centuries — is an active and architecturally interesting building. The side streets around the market, especially in the early morning when the weekly market is at its busiest, give a genuine sense of the layered culture of the eastern Qinghai plateau. Guide is not a tourist town; it functions as a real agricultural hub for the surrounding county, which makes wandering it more interesting than the more polished destination towns closer to Xining.
