Yellow River at Guide — the Crystal River

The Yellow River at Guide is one of the most scenic stretches of the river's entire 5,464-kilometre course. At this elevation — around 2,200 metres — the water is clear and rapid, running over sandstone and granite boulders through a gorge of deep red cliffs, and the colour contrast between the turquoise water and the crimson rock is genuinely striking. The river banks near town are walkable and popular with local families in good weather.

The wetland areas at the river's edge host interesting birdlife including black storks and various waders. Fishing is practised from the banks. The standard way to appreciate the gorge is to take a taxi or walk to the riverside park on the south bank, about 2 kilometres from the town centre, from which several paths lead along the cliff edge with views down to the water. Boating trips on the river can occasionally be arranged locally.

A story
The Yellow River (Huang He) is famous worldwide for its opaque, silt-laden flow — the reason the Chinese historically called it "the river that ran upside down," since its load of yellow sediment made it look solid. But at Guide, above the main sediment sources to the east, the water is startlingly clear and fast, green-blue over visible boulders. The Chinese call this stretch the "crystal river," a nickname that astonishes visitors who know the river only from its downstream incarnation.
