The Hall of Great Prayers is the largest building in the monastery, a massive whitewashed structure that can accommodate hundreds of monks for simultaneous prayer sessions. It houses several important objects, including thangka embroideries of exceptional size and quality that are unrolled from the walls during major ceremonies. The golden reliquary said to contain Tsongkhapa's hair occupies a place of honour.
During the four major Summons Ceremonies that punctuate the monastery's annual calendar, this hall becomes the epicentre of the complex: monks fill the courtyard for philosophical debates, the great thangkas are displayed on the hillside behind the hall, and pilgrims from across the Amdo plateau arrive to accumulate merit. The ceremonies are open to respectful visitors, though photography during prayers is restricted and moving quietly around monks at worship is expected.
