Gaojiabao is the kind of old northern town that feels closer to the loess plateau than to glossy urban China. Its walls and street grid go back to the Ming dynasty, and the surrounding lanes still carry the rough texture of northern Shaanxi: brick gates, compact courtyards, and cave-house forms tucked into the earth.
It is a good counterweight to Shenmu's more obviously archaeological sights. Come for a slow wander rather than a checklist visit, and pair it with nearby Great Wall remains or the Shimao ruins if you have a driver for the day.
