Shenmu offers two attractions at opposite ends of the historical spectrum: the Shimao Ruins, one of China's most significant Neolithic sites currently under excavation, and Lake Hongjiannao, a desert freshwater lake that functions as a critical bird habitat. Neither is yet on the standard tourist circuit, which is part of their appeal.
