Hongjiannao Lake is China's largest desert freshwater lake, set in a dry landscape north of Shenmu. The lake has shrunk since the 1970s because of climate change and mining pressure, but it remains a striking natural sight and an important bird habitat.
It is best treated as a half-day excursion from Shenmu, with the wide water, open sky, and desert edge scenery as the main draw.
