The Penglai seafront promenade runs below the pavilion headland along a stretch of coast where the Bohai Sea meets the Yellow Sea. The waterfront is low-key compared to the developed beaches of nearby Yantai, with working fishing boats moored alongside the tourist pier, seafood restaurants on the landward side, and the cliff of Danya Mountain with the pavilion silhouetted above.
This is the right place to eat lunch before or after visiting the pavilion: the seafood here is caught from local boats, and the restaurants along the seafront serve it simply — steamed scallops, grilled razor clams, sea urchin, and the sea cucumbers that are both a local delicacy and a significant export commodity. Prices are reasonable; point and choose from the display tanks.
