Fangtze Eurotown

Fangtze Eurotown is a district in southern Weifang that preserves around 160 buildings from the German and Japanese colonial periods in various states of restoration. The German presence here was part of the broader Jiaozhou leasehold — Qingdao got the port and the famous brewery, while Weifang got a railway junction and the industrial infrastructure that went with it.

The buildings include former administrative offices, railway company facilities, residential villas, and warehouses. Some have been converted to restaurants and small hotels; others survive in partial ruin. It is a less polished heritage experience than Qingdao's German quarter, which works in its favor for visitors who find that district over-managed. Fangtze is in the southern part of the city, about 20 minutes from the city center by bus.

A story
Weifang was occupied first by Germany (1898–1914) and then by Japan (1914–1922) during the colonial period — an unusual double occupation that left architectural traces from two quite different imperial traditions. The German buildings tend toward the heavier Wilhelmine civic style; the Japanese additions are lighter and more eclectic. Walking through the surviving streets, you can read the succession of colonial powers from the buildings themselves.
