Weixian Internment Camp Museum

The Weixian Internment Camp Museum occupies part of the former compound where the Japanese military held around 2,000 foreign civilians — mostly missionaries, businesspeople, and their families — from 1942 to 1945. The prisoners came primarily from Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia, and included teachers, doctors, and children from the Chefoo School who had been separated from their parents.

The museum documents the camp's daily life through photographs, personal letters, diaries, and artifacts from former inmates. The former hospital building and several dormitory blocks survive. The site is located in what is now a residential and educational district of central Weifang; the Wikipedia coordinates place it precisely, and it is accessible by public transport.

A story
Among the approximately 2,000 civilians interned at Weixian from 1942 to 1945 was Eric Liddell, the Scottish Olympic sprinter whose story was told in the film Chariots of Fire. Liddell died in the camp of a brain tumor in February 1945, five months before liberation. He was 43 years old.
