Penglai, about an hour by road or bus, is the most obvious day trip from Yantai: the clifftop Penglai Pavilion is one of the four great classical pavilions of China and the setting is genuinely dramatic, with the sea visible from the ramparts and the Changdao Islands in the distance on clear days. The site is the origin of multiple legends about immortals setting sail for the mythical eastern isles.
