Zibo Museum of Ceramics

The Zibo Museum of Ceramics documents 8,000 years of pottery production in the region — a span that runs from Neolithic painted pottery through the development of stoneware and porcelain traditions that made Zibo's kilns important suppliers to the imperial court and commercial markets from the Han Dynasty onwards.

The collection is organized chronologically and technically: each major kiln type (Jun, Cizhou, and the local Zibo traditions) is represented with examples that illustrate the development of glaze chemistry, kiln technology, and decorative style. The Boshan colored glaze section is the most visually striking. The museum is in the Zhangdian district near the city center.

A story
Zibo's ceramic tradition includes a distinctive specialty: Boshan colored glaze, produced in the Boshan district to the south of the city. Boshan glasswork and glaze has been produced for imperial patronage since the Ming Dynasty, and the techniques for achieving the vivid colors — achieved through precise temperature control and mineral additions — were kept secret within family workshops for generations.
