Zhenwu Peak

The summit peak of Beiwudang is dedicated to Zhenwu, the True Martial God — one of the most important deities in the Taoist pantheon, patron of the north and protector of the empire. A small summit shrine marks the highest point, and the walk up from An'guo Temple takes about ninety minutes on the main staircase path, longer if you take the longer ridge route that loops past several secondary shrines and stone hermitages.

The ascent passes through distinct vegetation zones: the lower slopes are loess scrub and terraced field, giving way to patchy pine and oak forest in the mid-sections before the ridge opens onto bare rock and mountain grass near the top. The summit views on clear days extend across the plateau to the west and south, and on autumn mornings before the haze builds, you can see the Yellow River as a pale thread in the distance. The descent via the east ridge is less steep and passes several smaller carved cave shrines that are easy to miss on the main route up.
