Jiuzhaigou Valley

Jiuzhaigou is the most celebrated natural sight in western Sichuan — a deep valley in the Min Mountains whose lakes, waterfalls, and forests have made it one of China's most photographed places. The water is exceptional: mineral-rich and almost unnaturally clear, the lakes shift from deep blue to turquoise to green as you move through the valley. The Five-Colour Pool, Pearl Shoal Waterfall, and Mirror Lake are the set pieces; there are dozens more at every turn.

The park has been carefully managed since a 2017 earthquake caused significant damage and required partial closure for restoration. Visitor numbers are now capped and timed entry slots must be booked well in advance during peak seasons. Despite the crowds, the scenery is genuinely extraordinary. Budget a full day, wear comfortable walking shoes, and go in spring or autumn if you can — the colours are richer and the crowds thinner than midsummer.

A story
Jiuzhaigou means "Valley of Nine Villages" — the nine Tibetan villages that have existed here for centuries gave the valley its name. The five-coloured lakes owe their colour to the interaction of mineral deposits, algae, and sunlight refracting through water of exceptional clarity.
