Darchen

Darchen is the gateway settlement at the southern base of Mount Kailash, at 4,560 metres. It is a small, functional town that has grown specifically to serve the flow of pilgrims and trekkers. Guesthouses, small restaurants, equipment hire, and food stalls cluster here, and most visitors spend at least one night before beginning the kora. The town has electricity, basic medical facilities, and enough facilities to sort out any last-minute gear problems.

Before setting out on the kora, check in with the local administration office, which may require additional permit verification. Many trekkers hire a guide or join a small group in Darchen — the route is well-marked but the altitude demands respect, and conditions on the Drolma La can change rapidly.
