Getting There

Zhangmu is reached from the Tibetan plateau by the Friendship Highway — the road connecting Lhasa to Nepal. From Lhasa, the drive takes two to three days, passing through Shigatse, Gyantse, and over the high plateau before the dramatic descent into the gorge at Zhangmu. Most travellers make this journey as part of an organised Tibet tour, as independent travel in Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit and is generally conducted through a licensed agency with a guide.

From Nepal, Zhangmu is reached via Kodari on the Nepali side of the border, accessible by bus or jeep from Kathmandu (approximately 4-6 hours depending on road conditions). Check current border status before travelling — the route has experienced disruptions due to earthquake damage and diplomatic conditions, and the situation changes.

Important: Independent travel in Tibet is heavily restricted. All foreign visitors (except Chinese citizens) must join an organised tour with a licensed guide and carry both a Chinese visa and a Tibet Travel Permit.
