Getting around Altay Prefecture requires patience and flexibility. Distances are large, roads can be poor, and public transport is thin outside of the main towns.
Within the Kanas Scenic Area, a compulsory shuttle bus system operates in summer — private vehicles are not permitted past the main gate. The buses run frequently and cover the main viewpoints and trailheads. Outside summer, the road may be impassable without a 4WD.
Hiring a private car and driver in Altay City or Jiadengyu is the most flexible option for reaching outlying villages and valleys. Negotiate rates carefully; drivers are accustomed to tourists and prices vary. For those with camping experience, renting a car and camping in the meadows is viable in summer — but confirm current regulations, as access rules change.
Between towns, shared taxis supplement the sparse bus services and are often faster. Altay City itself is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle.
