Fairy Bay (Shenxian Wan)

Fairy Bay — Shenxian Wan — is one of several viewpoints in the Kanas Scenic Area where the meandering Kanas River forms tight horseshoe bends visible from the hillside above. The composition — blue-green river, old-growth forest, mountain backdrop — is particularly striking in autumn when the deciduous trees turn colour. The site is accessible via the shuttle bus system and is one of the most visited spots in the area.

Despite the crowds in peak season, the scenery justifies the visit. The overlook is reached via a wooden boardwalk and staircase climbing through the forest. Getting there early, before the buses fill up, makes for a far better experience.

Fairy Bay is typically visited together with Moon Bay (Yue Liang Wan), a similar horseshoe bend a short distance away, as part of a morning or afternoon circuit of the lower Kanas valley.

A story
Fairy Bay earned its name from the way autumn mist settles over the horseshoe bends in the Kanas River, hiding the water but leaving the gold and red treetops visible above the cloud. Chinese travel photographers have made this their most sought-after shot from the Altay region — but to get it, you need to be up before dawn and positioned on the overlook within the first hour of light.
