The Altay Mountain Ski Resort, located on the slopes of the Altay range near Altay City, is one of the few purpose-built ski resorts in Xinjiang. It has gained a measure of international attention in recent years as part of China's push to develop winter sports infrastructure following the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The resort receives heavy snowfall between November and March, and conditions can be excellent.
For foreign visitors, the resort is primarily of interest as part of a broader winter trip to the region. The scale is modest compared to major Chinese ski areas in the northeast, but the setting — with views across the Central Asian steppe — is unusual. Snow guarantee runs reliably from early December through March.
Equipment rental is available on site. Note that accommodation options near the resort are limited; Altay City, 30–40 minutes by road, has more choices.
