Han New City

The Han New City (Renmin Donglu and the surrounding grid of streets) is the part of Kashgar that could be transplanted wholesale to any medium-sized Chinese city without attracting much notice. Wide avenues, KFC, bubble tea shops, and department stores make up a landscape that contrasts sharply with the Uyghur old town two kilometres to the west. The two halves of the city exist in parallel rather than in dialogue.

That said, the New City has its uses for travellers. The bus station for regional services to Hotan, Yarkand, and Tashkurgan is here, as are the largest supermarkets and pharmacies. The restaurants along the main streets serve a mix of Sichuan, Cantonese, and Xinjiang Han cuisine at reasonable prices. If you are spending several days in Kashgar it is worth walking through at least once, if only to understand the full picture of what the city has become.
