People's Park is the green lung of central Ürümqi, a large urban park that functions as a genuine gathering place for the city's residents rather than a tourist attraction. On weekend mornings it fills with older couples doing ballroom dancing, groups practising fan dancing or tai chi, and families spreading out picnics on the grass. There is a calm to it that can feel like a breath of fresh air after the intensity of the bazaar areas.
The park has a central lake where paddleboats can be hired in warmer months, a small amusement section for children, and extensive shaded paths. It is also one of the better places in Ürümqi to observe the city's ethnic mix in a relaxed setting — Han, Uyghur, Kazakh, and Hui families all use the park, and the interactions are notably ordinary and human. Entry is free or very low cost. Come in the morning if you want to see it at its most animated.
