The bar scene in Shangri-La is small and concentrated in the Old Town around the central square. In the evenings the square fills up with locals dancing in circles to recorded Tibetan music; a fringe of small bars and tea houses lines the edges, where backpackers drink yak-butter cocktails and rotgut Yunnan beer and look at the stars. Things wind down by midnight; at 3,200 metres people sleep early.
