Shangri-La is small. The Old Town (Dukezong) takes a morning to wander; the major monastery and Napa Lake are short drives out. The point of coming here, however, is mostly outside the town itself — the high-altitude lakes, the Tibetan grasslands, and the road north toward Deqin and the Meili snow range. Most travellers spend two or three days in town and use it as a base for day trips and acclimatisation before pushing further into the Tibetan plateau.
