Approach Trail from Xidang

The approach from Xidang to Yubeng is a six to eight hour walk over a high pass at 3,900 metres, descending to the village at 3,100 metres on the other side. The trail is the only way in or out — no road reaches Yubeng — and this fact alone shapes what the place is. The isolation filters who comes, and once inside the valley the atmosphere is quieter and more intimate than the approach would suggest.

The trail passes through remarkable terrain: pine and fir forest in the lower sections, alpine meadows near the pass, and views of the Meili Snow Mountain massif throughout the upper sections. The descent into Yubeng's valley is dramatic — the village suddenly visible far below, surrounded by forested slopes with the snow peaks above. Muleback rides are available from Xidang for those unable or unwilling to walk; horses and mules are a normal part of the supply economy here. Allow a full day for the approach and do not rush the descent.

A story
The trail from Xidang to Yubeng crosses a pass at around 3,900 metres, and many visitors who have flown recently from low-altitude cities are surprised by how the altitude affects them on the climb. Yaks and mules carry loads up the same path — both because some visitors choose to ride and because Yubeng residents need a supply chain. It is one of the few places in Yunnan where the practical use of pack animals for transport remains genuinely functional rather than a tourist attraction.
